New Change for Senate Causes Controversy

On Friday October 7th, 2011, Senator Harry Reid made a decision to narrow change in the chamber’s procedures. This brought all kinds of controversy and a lot of negative feedback. Many things could go wrong with his decision; it makes it harder for Democrats to get bills taken out because the Republicans have more power and, it also makes it easier for Republicans to get there way by forcing use of big majority votes on their issues. This new decision restricts the power of senators to force votes on amendments after a long speech about why a bill should be vetoed. This decision, however, is beneficial to the Republican Party because now they hold a majority of the power.

I believe that Senator Harry Reid’s decision is not the best for our nation’s chamber. As the author of the article states that this decision gives Republicans more control and leaves Democrats with almost no power on majority voting. In the system of checks and balances, everything in the three branches of power is suppose to be equal, and one can overrule if they feel like someone else has too much power. In this case, Harry Reid has unbalanced the power for voting on vetoes. Now no one gets the chance to argue after a veto and make a case for him or herself. This is the first time that the Chamber rules have been changed, and not for the better.
