Around noon on Thursday, October 6, 2011 the people of ‘Occupy NOLA’ held a protest where they marched throughout the city before ending up at Duncan Plaza, which is across from City Hall. The walk garnered roughly 300 people. Occupy NOLA does many of the same things that the original Occupy Wall Street does. They meet in a “general assembly” with a broadcast shown on their Livetream website. Occupy NOLA, got its start from Occupy Wall Street, a protest that has been sweeping the Nation. U.S. citizens are holding demonstrations through marches, and online protests about their unhappiness with our economy. There are over 20,000 marchers nationwide, and have been over 800 arrests due to the protests. The Occupy NOLA organization has over 1,793 Twitter followers and 6,275 likes on Facebook, as of October 10, 2011.
Occupy Wall Street and Occupy NOLA heavily uses the grassroots pathway of action. Citizens have, for years, tried the elections pathway only to succeed for a little while. Due to the state of the current recession, they have tried a different route. It has come up because far too many of the everyday citizens of the United States are struggling to go through just everyday life.
